Facts About The Ancient Gold Found In Scotland
By Jack Wagon Published: 01/28/2010
When I look few years back, I remember that once I went into woods with my metal detector to find some treasure, and I could only find a few pennies. Perhaps, I was not a lucky man. Do you think it is possible that one morning you go out on your first treasure hunt with a metal detector in your hand, which you bought 5 days ago, and you discover something that would not only totally revolutionised your life, but also changed the status of your country. Sounds like fiction!
The fact is that a very similar thing happened to a person named David Booth from Sterling shire, Scotland. When he set out on treasure hunt, within the first hour, he discovered gold necklaces dating back to the Iron Age (approximately 300BC - 100BC), which was worth more than one million pounds (that is called hitting the jackpot). The first thing that he did was to contact the National Museum of Scotland, whose officials have named this one of the most remarkable finds in Scotland in the last 150 years.
The experts from the museum included Dr. Fraser Hunter, set out to digging around the area where this treasure was found. After some investigation related to identification, and forensic, it was discovered that these artefacts are from South-western France. This shows that these might have been purchased, and for some reasons, ended up in this area. This discovery has brought great breakthrough in the ancient living, and culture of the inhabitants of Scotland. This shows that they were actually much less remote, and more accessible than what has been assumed previously.
The excavate site exposed remnants of a timber roundhouse, leading authorities to consider that the jewellery was hidden for protection, or probably used as a prehistoric votive. These findings advocate that tribes in what we think of as 'Scotland' had relatively wider links than archaeologists ten years ago would have accepted. They knew what was going on elsewhere, appreciated similar things, and copied practice in burials, or votives. The excavate site is being kept undisclosed at this moment in time while the "Treasure Trove Unit" of the National Museum of Scotland seeks to respond questions that have been brought about by this latest unearthing.
According to Scottish law, the crown has the authority to profess any archaeological item discovered in Scotland. The law clearly states that the finders do not have any right on the items found, and they must provide all the information of the objects to the treasure trove unit. Nevertheless, the finder may be rewarded with the money equal to the value of the item found.
We came to know through BBC Radio Scotland that the historian, Fiona Watson said, the jewellery is the property of the crown, and the crown at the discretion of Her Majesty may award the finder a prize worth the jewellery found. I am confident the same will happen. The question arises here is that, where this precious jewellery will go?
Terry Hebert is also a metal detector who has recently found big hoard of gold. He found around 1000 different objects in the treasure hunt. Thousands of people gathered in Birmingham when they heard that the discovered gold would be displayed for public in the running year. The gold will be evaluated in London.
British gold has its own uniqueness. It is different from mining industries of Nevada, China, and South Africa, as in the UK they hold back the finest gold. The gold from mines is silted, not dug from rock to find precious metal. - 28385
