Wireless Broadband - The New Focus Of The FCC
By Greg Coleman Published: 09/25/2009
The FCC has begun to dip its toes into the pool of wireless broadband, and is finding the water is just right for a little churning. As part of Congress's plan to have a National Broadband Plan in place by February 2010, The FCC plans to examine ways to bring access to more Americans, thereby increasing opportunities and perhaps even aiding in job creation.
Toward that end, the FCC brought four wireless tech pros on board the FCC Wireless Bureau senior staff inthe hope that they can help craft a coherent and forward-thinking plan. These four individuals, all with extensive experience in wireless and broadband, will work closely with the Obama administration to help craft this policy.
In August the new FCC chairman Julius Genachowski, a former law school classmate of President Barack Obamas, toured California in support of the FCC's ongoing attempt to craft the nations first broadband plan, putting in appearances at a San Francisco public housing project and a children's hospital in Palo Alto.
Genachowskis trip, while seemingly a fact-finding mission, along with the 18 broadband hearings the FCC will hold, is intended to send a message that the FCC is planning a very ambitious proposal for the countrys IT infrastructure, a plan that goes beyond simply giving grants to get broadband access to all parts of the country.
The question then needs to be asked whether or not the Obama administration will push for ways to regulate and restrict content, or to simply increase access and opportunities for all Americans. With all the concern regarding the fairness doctrine and the recent government attempts to exercise control in many areas in unprecedented fashion, one is left to wonder just what the agenda may be here, and where it could lead.
There is a lot of good the FCC could do in regards to increasing wireless accessibility and quality in areas that, as of now, are either underserved or not served at all, assuming that there is no hidden agenda here. Most of the mobile companies are a little nervous about the possibility of new regulation, but are also looking at the possible opportunities this could bring in terms of new unserved markets. Until the plan is created and put inplace they will be standing by.
